Description

This Best-Ever Green Bean Casserole is a classic comfort dish combining fresh green beans, savory mushrooms, and crispy fried onions in a creamy sauce, perfect for family gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 2 lb. fresh green beans
  • Kosher salt
  • 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 lb. crimini mushrooms
  • 6 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 4 large sprigs thyme
  • 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1¼ cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • ¾ cup French’s fried onions

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F and boil a large pot of salted water.
  • Cook fresh green beans in boiling water for 3 minutes, drain and cool.
  • Sauté mushrooms in olive oil until golden brown; season with salt and set aside.
  • Make a cream sauce by melting butter, adding flour, milk, and cream; whisk and season.
  • Layer green beans and mushrooms in a baking dish, pour cream sauce on top.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes; uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes. Top with fried onions and bake for 3 more minutes.
  • Let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Adjust garlic to taste for additional flavor.
Use frozen green beans if desired, ensuring they are thawed and drained.
Can make ahead of time and refrigerate before baking.
