Ingredients
Scale
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 8 ounces Crisco
- ½ cup water, cold
- 12 medium apples, peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- ½ cup sugar
- â…“ cup light brown sugar
- 4 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ cup water
- 3 tablespoons butter, cut into small cubes
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the Crisco, and blend using your fingers until it resembles coarse meal. Create a well in the center and pour in the cold water.
- Gently mix the flour mixture with the water until combined and all flour is moistened. Avoid overmixing or kneading! Split the dough into two equal portions, shape them into flat disks, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- On a floured surface, roll out one disk into a circle about ¼" thick, enough to overhang your pie plate by at least ½". Place this in a 9" pie plate and set aside.
- Roll the second disk into a circle of the same thickness, then cut into ¾" strips using a pizza cutter. Place these strips on a tray and refrigerate while preparing the filling.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider using a mix of different apple varieties.
Ensure the butter is cold when adding it to the filling for a flakier crust.
Always refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes before rolling to improve texture.
