Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups sugar
- Zest from 1 navel orange
- ¾ cup butter, softened
- 3 eggs
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup orange juice
- ¼ cup applesauce
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp orange juice
- ¼ tsp vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a 9” cake pan by lining it with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine sugar and orange zest, rubbing them together until fragrant. Add softened butter and beat until fluffy, about 1-2 minutes.
- In the same bowl, mix in eggs, milk, orange juice, applesauce, and vanilla until well combined.
- In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, stirring gently until the flour is just combined. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
- Bake for 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake sit in the pan for 10 minutes before carefully transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the glaze, whisk together orange juice and vanilla, then incorporate powdered sugar until smooth.
- Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cake, spreading it evenly across the top. Allow to set for a few minutes before slicing.
Notes
Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for best mixing results.
Keep leftover cake covered at room temperature for up to 3 days.
For added flavor, you can sprinkle some zest over the glaze before serving.
